Dr. Claybon Lea, Jr. is the pastor of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Fairfield and Suisun City, CA. He has been blessed with the honor of being called to the church in which he was baptized, licensed and ordained to preach. He is only the second pastor in the church’s history, having succeeded his late father and church organizer, Rev. Claybon Lea.
Under Dr. Lea’s leadership, Mount Calvary has experienced phenomenal holistic growth. Dr. Lea, in 2004, led Mount Calvary in a move to the city of Fairfield, to occupy a 48,000 sq. ft. building. In 2005 the church was listed in Outreach Magazine as one of the 100 fastest growing churches in America. Consequently, the ministries of the church have multiplied to meet the growing needs of the ministry.
Dr. Lea has been blessed with both the burning and the learning. He is a distinguished graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA, with a B. A. Degree in Religion. He received his master of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He also earned his doctor of ministry degree from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH.
In 2000, Dr. Lea was inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr., Board of Preachers at Morehouse College. In August of 2004 Dr. Lea was selected to attend The University of Oxford in England as a participant in the first Oxford Round Table discussion on Religion, Education and Government. His preaching and teaching gifts have afforded him the opportunity to minister in West Africa, Germany, the Bahamas, Bermuda and throughout the United States. His leadership is blessing the body of Christ outside of Mount Calvary as a past Moderator of the Progressive Baptist Missionary Educational District Association of the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area, immediate past President of the California State Baptist Convention (youngest in the convention’s history), VP-Far-West Region of National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., 2009 Morning Preacher for the prestigious Hampton Ministers Conference and a leader of significant Boards of Directors. He is a contributing author to the best selling book, Sound the Trumpet Again, and is the author of Lessons From A Dying Savior. He is founder and CEO of CLJ Ministries, Inc. and the gospel music label 4Leavites Entertainment Group (4LEG). He is also a gospel music recording artist – his first CD project “It’s About Time” was produced and released by the 4LEG label. This project won him consideration in the initial round of votes for “Best New Artist” in the 2012 Stellar Awards.
Dr. Lea and his wife, Janel W. Lea, are the parents of four wonderful children, two boys and two girls.
